About

Susana Monteiro (36 years old) is a Junior Researcher in the Neuroscience Research Domain at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) - University of Minho. She completed her BSc in 2007, her MSc in 2008 and her PhD (Health Sciences - Neuroimmunology) in 2016. Her PhD work identified a new role for  a  proinflammatory cytokine – IFNgamma, in the modulation of hippocampal plasticity and cognitive function with implications for the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. During her scientific training she was involved in multiple projects spanning from a clinical research project searching for new MS biomarkers, to pharmacological projects testing and assessing anti-depressants efficacy and mode of action in pre-clinical rodent models of depression, to basic science projects understanding mechanisms underlying cognitive function.

She is now interested in understanding the neural control of the immune response and how spinal cord injury disrupts physiological neuroimmune interactions. She aims at identifying peripheral targets for immunomodulation and repair of the injured central nervous system. Her research focus both at understanding the contribution of inflammation for secondary injury and designing immunomodulatory strategies to boost repair of the spinal cord after injury.
