Susana Monteiro (34 years old) completed her BSc in 2007, her MSc in 2008 and her PhD (Health Sciences -Neuroimmunology) in 2016. Her PhD work focused on exploring a novel role for the proinflammatory cytokine – IFNgamma, in the modulation of hippocampal plasticity and cognitive function. During her scientific training she was involved in multiple projects spanning from a clinical research project searching for new multiple sclerosis biomarkers, to pharmacological projects testing and assessing anti-depressants efficacy and mode of action using pre-clinical rodent models of depression, to basic science projects understanding mechanisms underlying cognitive function.

She is now interested on strategies to promote neuroregeneration and repair using a spinal cord injury model. Particularly she is interested in shaping the immune response to promote repair of the injured spinal cord. 
She is currently an author of 9 published papers in 
international peer-reviewed journals.  Additionally she is author of more than 15 abstracts submitted to international conferences, and was awarded with 7 prizes for poster and oral communications. She is also member of the International Neuroimmunology Society, member of Portuguese Society for Neuroscience and an affiliate member of the Institute of Anatomical Sciences (UK).
